Domain-general cognitive control and domain-specific language control in bilingual aphasia: A systematic quantitative literature review

نویسندگان

چکیده

For successful language production in a target language, bilingual individuals with aphasia must inhibit interference from the non-target language. It is currently unknown if inhibition of involves general cognitive control (domain-general control) or whether it specific to linguistic mechanisms (domain-specific during production. The primary aim this systematic quantitative literature review was identify and synthesize available evidence, relation bilinguals aphasia, for these two mechanisms. We conducted search across five databases using set inclusion/exclusion criteria designed review. extracted data twenty studies reporting original research aphasia. results provided evidence both domain-general domain-specific mechanisms, although most showed involvement control. Available neuroimaging indicated that neural regions involved were anterior cingulate cortex, caudate nucleus, basal ganglia, frontal lobe. Theoretical implications inhibitory model, clinical assessment treatment abilities as well need future are discussed.

The role of domain-general cognitive control in language comprehension

What role does domain-general cognitive control play in understanding linguistic input? Although much evidence has suggested that domain-general cognitive control and working memory resources are sometimes recruited during language comprehension, many aspects of this relationship remain elusive. For example, how frequently do cognitive control mechanisms get engaged when we understand language?...

Understanding the link between bilingual aphasia and language control

The study of bilingual aphasia is important because we need to be able to recommend treatments consistent with a plausible estimate of the course of recovery. Yet we lack a causal account of recovery patterns. We distinguish between the neural representation of a language network and the regions involved in the control of that network. Contrary to some claims, we argue on the basis of normal da...

Bilingual Aphasia: Adapted Language Networks and Their Control

This review focuses on the nature of language recovery in bilingual individuals post-stroke and on the effectiveness of treatment. We consider neuropsychological and neuroimaging papers on bilingual aphasic individuals in the period 2003-2007. We examine the extent to which current evidence supports the notion that different languages are represented in distinct processing areas or are distribu...
